Overview

This Modern Home Extension project, TAOB 23-118, represents a complete transformation of a traditional family property into a contemporary, light-filled home designed for modern living.

From concept through to completion, our approach focused on unlocking the full potential of the existing structure—introducing space, improving flow, and creating meaningful connections between interior and exterior environments.

The result is a carefully crafted modern home extension that enhances both functionality and long-term value.

The Client Brief

The clients brought the property after realising we had obtained planning permission for the works and felt it was just what they were looking for!

The home prior consisted of:

Limited natural light
Poor connection between rooms
Inefficient layout
Lack of usable family space

The goal was to create a modern home extension that would feel open, cohesive, and tailored to how they live day-to-day.

Design Strategy for a Modern Home Extension

To meet the brief, we developed a design strategy centred around:

Maximising natural light
Enhancing spatial flow
Expanding usable floor area
Creating visual connections across the home

By combining architectural extensions with internal reconfiguration, this modern home extension delivers both aesthetic and practical improvements.

Scope of Works

This modern home extension project included a comprehensive set of architectural interventions:

Two-Storey Side Extension

Adding significant volume to the home, this extension creates new living and sleeping spaces while maintaining architectural balance.

Single-Storey Rear Extension

A key feature of the modern home extension, the rear addition opens up the ground floor and connects seamlessly to the garden.

New Rear Dormers

Dormers were introduced to maximise upper floor space, increasing head height and usability.

Full Internal Reconfiguration

Both ground and first floors were redesigned to improve layout efficiency and flow—an essential component of any successful modern home extension.

Transforming Space & Light

One of the defining outcomes of this modern home extension is the dramatic improvement in natural light.

Large glazed openings, sliding doors, and carefully positioned windows allow daylight to flood the interiors. This not only enhances visual comfort but also creates a stronger connection to the outdoor environment.

The rear façade, in particular, plays a crucial role—blurring the boundary between inside and outside, which is a hallmark of contemporary modern home extension design.

Layout Reconfiguration

Beyond the physical extensions, the internal transformation was key to the success of this modern home extension.

Ground Floor
Open-plan kitchen, dining, and living areas
Improved circulation between spaces
Direct access to outdoor areas
First Floor
Better bedroom layouts
Increased usable floor space
Enhanced privacy and functionality

This thoughtful reconfiguration ensures the home works intuitively for everyday living.

The Final Result

The completed modern home extension delivers:

A bright, open, and contemporary living environment
Strong visual and physical connections between spaces
Increased property value
A home tailored to the client’s lifestyle

The transformation is a space that feels entirely new while remaining rooted in the original structure.

Why This Modern Home Extension Works

This project succeeds because it balances design ambition with practical living needs.

Key strengths include:

Cohesive design language across old and new elements
Efficient use of space through smart planning
Enhanced natural light throughout the home
Future-proofed layout adaptable to changing needs

A well-executed modern home extension is not just about adding space—it’s about improving how a home feels and functions.

3D Visualisation

A crucial part of this modern home extension project was the use of detailed 3D visuals during the design phase.

These visuals allowed the clients to:

Clearly understand the proposed layout and volumes
Experience how light would move through the space
Visualise materials, finishes, and architectural form
Make informed decisions early in the process

By developing realistic 3D representations, we ensured alignment between design intent and final outcome—reducing uncertainty and helping bring the modern home extension to life before construction even began.
