Christmas Has Arrived at The Art of Building!

A Gingerbread Build (With Full Regulations, Naturally)

Every December, our office window becomes a small celebration of architecture, craft and festive cheer—but this year, we’ve taken our tradition a step further. Inspired by the detail and discipline that shapes every project we take on, the TAOB team has produced what may be the most thoroughly documented gingerbread house in the country.

Yes—our Christmas window display is a fully drawn, fully specified gingerbread dwelling, complete with elevation drawings, structural notes and even building regulations… all rendered in icing sugar and imagination.

A Festive Interpretation of Architecture

At the heart of the display sits a set of architectural drawings prepared exactly as we would for any real project. Scaled elevations of a gingerbread cottage—iced mouldings, sugar-glazed windows, and frosted roof tiles—are presented on an A1 sheet. Surrounding them is a winter landscape of soft snow, warm fairy lights, baubles, and the occasional mischievous elf who have worked hard on our drawings.

Through the glass, visitors can spot a full-size model of the proposed “development”—a pastel pink gingerbread facade that mirrors the technical drawings beside it. Together, they form a miniature scene that blends architectural rigour with festive playfulness.

The Most Compliant Gingerbread House in Town

Our building regulations notes cover everything from:

Materials & Workmanship: 100% edible and beautifully iced.

Fire Safety: Marshmallow escape routes included.

Thermal Performance: walls insulated with whipped-cream foam.

Foundations: gingerbread slab on royal icing base.

Drainage: water to be directed towards a chocolate soakaway.

A serious document for a very unserious building—but that contrast is what makes it so very TAOB.

A Window for the Community

Each year, our Christmas window aims to bring a little brightness to the street and raise a smile for those walking past. This installation has already been attracting attention, from children pressing their faces to the glass to adults laughing at the level of detail only architects could justify applying to confectionery.

It’s a small reminder of why we love what we do: ideas, design, craftsmanship, and a touch of joy shared with the community around us.
